1492—Treaty of Etaples is signed between Charles VIII of France and Henry VII of England under which latter renounces claims to French territory in return for an indemnity.

1493—Christopher Columbus discovers Caribbean island of Dominica.

1534—England's parliament confirms King Henry VIII in all judicial and political powers formerly exercised by the Pope in England.

1760—Frederick the Great of Prussia with 44,000 men defeats 65,000 Austrian troops at Torgau under Count Daun in the Seven Years War; more than 13,000 Prussians die.

1762—Peace preliminaries of Fontainbleu are signed between France, Spain and Britain.

1839—First Opium War between China and Britain begins when British frigates blow up several Chinese junks off Canton after coming under attack.

1871—Henry Stanley finds African explorer Dr Livingstone, he presumes.

1903—Following a revolt engineered by the United States, Panama declares itself independent of Colombia.

1918—In World War I, part of the German fleet mutinies at Kiel, Poland declares its independence from Russia.

1926—Death of Annie Oakley, noted US markswoman who starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

1964—Lyndon B Johnson wins the US presidency by a landslide.

1968—Storms, landslides and floods take more than 100 lives and cause heavy damage in northern Italy.

1970—Marxist Salvador Allende becomes president of Chile.

1973—UN Emergency Force reports success in easing tension between Egyptian and Israeli troops at positions west of Suez Canal.

1975—The Queen opens an underwater pipeline to bring the first of Britain's North Sea oil ashore.

1988—Estimated 20,000 police stop South Korean students from carrying out a threat to seize and kill former leader Chun Doo Hwan.

1989—Bombs explode outside Beirut homes of three Christian legislators shortly after General Michel Aoun threatens to dissolve parliament if it ratifies peace treaty.

1990—Death of US musical star Mary Martin, aged 76.

1991—Israeli and Jordanian-Palestinian delegates agree to pursue talks on interim self-government in Israeli-occuped West Bank and Gaza Strip

1992—Bill Clinton defeats George Bush in US presidential elections.

1993—Government troops storm through a Croat district north of Sarajevo, prompting 15,000 terrified civilians to flee into the countryside.

1994—A Bosnian refugee, determined to call attention to the slaughter in his homeland, hijacks an airliner; he surrendered when he believed the world had heard his plea.

1994—In Sydney, ABC managing director David Hill resigns.

1995—Teenager convicted of killing a British tourist at a highway rest stop is sentenced to life in prison in Monticello, Florida.

1996—Female Afghan employees stay away from a relief agency's compound in Kabul after Taliban fighters threaten to hang them. The anti-Taliban coalition calls for talks without conditions.

1997—Iraqi President Saddam Hussein threatens to shoot down US planes monitoring the disarmament of his country.

1998—For the first time in a 30-year conflict, the Spanish government says it will hold talks with groups linked to the militant Basque ETA separatists.

1999—Russia test-fires a short-range interceptor missile, the first successful launch of the missile since 1993. Russia and the US are at odds over the US attempt to amend 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty to build a system to fend off missiles from small, rogue states.

2000—Singapore airlines apologises for its first fatal crash after investigators discover the pilot of a Los Angeles-bound jumbo jet missed clear warning signs and crashed while trying to take off on a runway full of construction equipment.

2001—US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld visits Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India to shore up support for on-going US military operations in Afghanistan against the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
