After completing this unit, you should be able to:
Recognise, label and draw a diagram of and describe the structure of the human respiratory system, including the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleural membranes, diaphragm, intercostal muscles and vocal cords.
Describe the mechanics of the breathing process including the action of the muscles involved and how this affects relative air pressures inside and outside the lungs.
Describe how the composition of inhaled and exhaled air differ and how the differences are brought about.
Describe how and where gas exchange between the air and blood takes place.
Describe the first aid techniques required in resuscitation.
Describe the role of red blood cells and plasma in the transport of gases.
Understand the diseases asthma, emphysema and lung cancer.
