After completing this unit, you should be able to:

  • Describe the role played by the skeleton in posture and locomotion.

  • Name the major bones and regions of the skeleton, describe their functions, and recognise bone as a connective tissue.

  • Recognise and describe the four main types of movable joints and the range of movements they permit, i.e. ball and socket, hinge, pivot, gliding.

  • Recognise and describe the structure of synovial joints, e.g. knee joint.

  • Describe the first aid required for bone fractures.

  • Describe the movement about a joint as a result of the contraction of paired muscles attached to bones by tendons.

  • Explain how the co-ordinated functioning of the muscles and the skeleton acts to support the body against gravity.

  • Recognise and label a diagram of the upper limbs including major bones and muscles and describe the function of these muscles in relation to object manipulation.

  • Describe the difference between precision and power grip and relate this to object manipulation

  • Recognise and label a diagram of the lower limbs including major bones and muscles and describe the function of these muscles in relation to locomotion.
