POP ART

Roy Lichtenstein

(1923 - 1997) Roy Lichtenstein was another "pioneer" in the Pop Art movement. The subject matter of his paintings was derived from the phenomena of mass culture. His artwork was a combination of abstract and commercial art. Very often, Lictenstein's art looked more like comic strips rather than masterpieces. His enlarged-cartoon artwork included the dots that make up a normal image. Like other artists, he practised the technique of duplication to repeat the dots. Most often, Lichtenstein's comic paintings included words in typical bubbles, which were taken from magazines of the time period. He was the first of many artists to hold a one man show of his cartoon paintings. The exhibit proved to be a sensation and paved the way for future artists to hold similar shows. Throughout Lichtenstein's career, he adopted the new style of Pop Art after experimenting with other forms of expression. His success helped him to achieve fame and contribute to the common style of Pop Art.
