Andy Warhol

(1930 - 1987) Andy Warhol was one of the most well renowned and innovative artists throughout the Pop Art period. Warhol is known for his large, colourful, and repetitive paintings and prints. He particularly concentrated on unusual artwork such as paintings of Campbell's Soup Cans and sculptures of Brillo soap pad cartons. Ironically, his artwork was mass produced in a workshop called the "Factory", like the mass production of consumer goods. To produce repetition and duplication in his artwork, he used a photographic silk screen process. Warhol is also known for his variations of celebrity portraits in bold and contrasting colours. A critic described Warhol's portraits of Marilyn Monroe like a can of soup; perfectly packaged, dehumanised, and uniformly perfect. Altogether, the message, depiction, and unique qualities of Warhol's art emphasised the commercial world in the technological society of the 1950's and 60's.
